Lemurs - Year 3

Autumn Term 1

Lemurs, welcome to your new class! I am really looking forward to a fun and exciting year with you all! This page will give you an outline of the topics we will be learning about this half term. 

Guided Reading

In guided reading, we will be reading the book ‘Flat Stanley’. 

We will answer questions around the key reading areas: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explain, retrieval, summary. 

English

English this half term will be text led, focusing on the book ‘Stone Age Boy’.  

Throughout this unit, all children will:

  • Plan, draft and orally rehearse writing, including selecting vocabulary and phrases to interest the reader.
  • Begin to evaluate the effectiveness of own and others’ writing, suggesting grammar and vocabulary improvements.
  • Use prepositions to express time, place and cause.
  • Use expanded noun phrases to add description and detail.

Children who are working deeper will: 

  • Demonstrate some awareness of purpose through selection of relevant content.

Maths
Our maths focus this half term is place value and addition and subtraction. Throughout these units, the children will:

  • Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations.
  • Recognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones).
  • Count from zero in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100.
  • Find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number.
  • Read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals words.
  • Compare and order numbers up to 1000.

  • Add and subtract numbers mentally, including: 
    -a 3-digit number and ones
    -a 3-digit number and tens
    -a 3 digit number and hundred 
  • Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction.
  • Solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction.
  • Estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers 

Science

In science we will be learning about rocks and fossils. Throughout this unit, the children will: 

  • Describe and compare different types of rock.
  • Compare and group rocks based on their simple physical properties.
  • Investigate the properties of rocks.
  • Understand was fossils are and how they are formed.
  • Understand that soil is made up of rocks and organic matter.

History
In history, we will be learning about the Stone Age to the Iron Age. Throughout this topic, the children will:

  • Learn about ‘pre-history’ and put events in chronological order.
  • Find out about how people lived and survived during the Mesolithic period.
  • Find out about how people lived in the Neolithic period by researching Skara Brae.
  • Learn about Stone Henge.
  • Find out about life in the Bronze Age.
  • Find out about life in the Iron Age.

Art

In Art, we will start by exploring cave paintings. We will be focusing on sketching throughout this unit. 

RE
In RE, we will be looking at 'Special Places' in different religions.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be focusing on ‘Our Bodies’ and how to be healthy. We will be learning about diet and exercise, sleep and hygiene. 
 

Computing
In Computing, we will be focusing on E-Safety. This will include how to stay safe online, regarding our personal information and understanding who we can and cannot trust online. 

Music
In music we will be creating compositions. This will include creating a soundscape using instruments, creating sounds, rhythms and melodies to accompany a story.

PE
PE will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesday with Mr Hall and Mr Kelly. Please ensure your child comes in to school in their full PE kits on these days. 

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Wednesday and needs to be returned the following Tuesday. This will include:

-Spellings on Google Classroom (to be tested on a Wednesday). 

-An English or reading activity on Google Classroom). 

-A maths activity set on MyMaths.

Reading books: 
The children will be given a levelled book from Oxford Owl and this will be changed once a week. It is important to re-read the book once you have finished as it will help you to build on your reading skills. Please ensure reading books are brought into school every day so that children can be listened to and work on their reading targets throughout the school week.
