Welcome to Tiger Class!
Autumn Term
Autumn Term 1
Tigers, welcome to your new class! I am really looking forward to a fun and exciting year with you all!
English
English this half term will be text led, focusing on the book ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.
Throughout this unit, all children will:

Use some full stops and capital letters.

Combine words to make a single clause sentences
Children who are working deeper will:

Use full stops with greater control.
Read, Write, Inc.
Phonics will take place daily, following the Read, Write, Inc. scheme. These lessons will incorporate learning phonics sounds, reading and spelling.
Maths
Our Maths focus this half term is place value to 10 and addition and subtraction. By the end of term the children will be able to:

Count to 10, forwards and backwards.

Count, read and write numbers to 10 in numerals and words.
-
Identify one more and one less than a given number.
-
Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations.
-
Use the language more than, less than, most, least and equal to.
-
Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10.
-
Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition, subtraction and equal signs.

Add and subtract one digit numbers to 10.
-
Solve one step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations and missing number problems.
Science
The topic for Autumn 1 is Everyday Materials. We will be investigating a variety of materials to decide what properties they have. We will be using vocabulary such as stretchy, squashy, hard, rough etc. The children will be working in their science groups and will be handling lots of different objects. Each science group will have a captain who will be in charge. The captain will change each half-term.
Vocabulary for this half term - wood, plastic, glass, paper, water, metal, rock, rough, smooth, bendy, hard, soft
We will also be studying the ‘Seasons’ over the year as another science topic.
The vocabulary for this topic is - summer, autumn, winter, spring, sun, day, moon, night, light, dark.
We have a science star each week. Somebody who added something special to our lessons.
Geography
In Geography, the children will be focusing on ‘Our School and the Local Area’. Throughout this topic, the children will:

Describe their local area using words and pictures.

Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study their school.

Say what they like and dislike about their locality.

Name the physical and human features around school.
-
Use locational language to describe features on a map.
-
Draw a simple map with symbols to create a key.
Art
In Art, we will start by exploring different shapes, line and patterns and will be using a variety of mediums including pencils, pastels and charcoal. We will also be looking at the artist Ian Fennelly and creating artwork inspired by him.
RE
The religion we will be focusing on this term is Christianity. Our Big Question to investigate for Autumn 1 is, ‘How did God show his love for the world?’. We will be looking at the Christian story of creation.
RE will be taught on a Thursday and they will need their wellies or other outdoor shoes in school that day (in a named bag please!) as we will be out on the field.
PSHE
The PSHE focus is ‘I can like myself the way I am’ and will be focused around the text ‘Elmer’ by David Mckee. The children will begin to understand the ways in which they are different and how to make their classroom welcoming to others.
Computing
In Computing, we will be focusing on E-Safety. This will include how to stay safe online, regarding our personal information and understanding who we can and cannot trust online.
Music
Our first music topic is ‘Simple Rhythms’. The children will practise using their voice, hands and instruments to create simple rhythms.
PE
PE will take place on Mondays and Fridays, this half term the children will be focusing on Dance and Team Games. Please ensure that your child has a named PE kit in school each day.
Staffing
Mrs Gregg will be teaching the children on Thursday afternoons during my PPA.
Working alongside myself will be Mrs Wilson each morning.
Homework
Homework will be sent home on a Friday and needs to be returned the following Friday. This will include work to consolidate the children’s learning from that week. Reading books will be changed every Friday.
Water bottles
Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school each day.

English and maths in Tiger class
Science
Our final science topic of the year is ‘Plants and Animals in our Local Area’. It will bring together a lot of strands of our animals and plants topics from the year. We will start the topic by looking at adult animals and their babies – do the adult and baby look the same? We will then move onto nocturnal animals and deciding what features a nocturnal animal needs to survive. We will tie up the year by going around our school field and looking at the different plants and animals which we can find on it.
We will be using the vocabulary from our previous plant and animal topics -
fish, reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians, herbivore, omnivore, carnivore, leg, elbow, arm, head, ear, nose, back, wings, beak, deciduous, evergreen trees, leaves, flowers (blossom), petals, fruit, roots, bulb, seed, trunk, branches, stem
We will also be concluding our ‘Seasons’ topic by looking at the season of summer and why days are different lengths.
The vocabulary for this topic is - summer, autumn, winter, spring, sun, day, moon, night, light, dark.
Tiger scientists
We have a science star each week. Somebody who added something special to our lessons or completed a super piece of work.
History
In History, the children will be learning about George Mottershead. Throughout this unit the children will:
- Ask and answer questions based on a photograph.
- Put events in chronological order.
- Find out more about George Mottershead using the internet.
- Create an information text about George Mottershead.
Art
In Art, our topic is ‘Animal Art’. Throughout this unit the children will:
- Print using different objects
- Print onto paper and textiles
- Design their own printing block
Tiger Artists and Designers
RE
After the children’s enthusiastic response to our Islam topic in RE Summer 1, I am really looking forward to sharing our new topic of Judaism with the class. Our Big Question for Summer 2 is, ‘What do Jewish people believe about God and the creation?’ We will look at the sacred text of Judaism, important people to those who follow the faith, and the importance of the creation story.
Exploring our world through history, geography and RE
Computing
In Computing, the topic is ‘Data, Research and Multimedia’. Throughout this unit the children will:
- Represent data in different ways
- Use an onscreen program to represent information with pictures
- Find pictures online
- Use the internet to research an animal
- Use photographs and add text to create a poster
- Record sound to present information
PSHE
In PSHE, we will be using the book ‘My World, Your World’ to explore diversity.
PE
PE will take place on Monday’s and Friday’s, please come in to school wearing your PE kit on these days. This half term the children will be focusing on Bat and Ball Skills and Tri Golf.
Music
Our Music topic is ‘Classical music, dynamics and tempo' based around the theme of animals. Throughout this unit, the children will:
- Use percussion and their body expressively in response to music
- Sing songs from memory
- Perform a song
- Use instruments to create different sounds
- Select and create sounds to tell a story

Mrs Gregg will be teaching the children on Thursday afternoons during my PPA.
Homework
Homework will be set on Google Classroom. There will be weekly spellings linked to the Read, Write, Inc. sounds learnt in class. There will also be a maths activity to consolidate the learning from the week. Sometimes there will be other activities to complete linked to the learning from the week. This will be set online on a Friday and needs to be submitted by the following Thursday.
A reading book will be sent home each week. Please read these books more than once if possible to increase fluency. You will change this every Friday so please make sure your reading book is brought back on this day.
There will also be a book set online that you have been reading in school, so you will be familiar with it. Please read this more than once and complete the tasks at the end.
Water bottles
Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school each day.
